Welcome to J. Lyndal Hughes Elementary School located in Northwest Independent School District. The school district believes the success of each student is the shared responsibility of students, families, schools, and communities.  Our campus looks forward to partnering with families and communities throughout the school year to prepare students to be future ready.

School History

J. Lyndal Hughes Elementary was named after Mr. J. Lyndal Hughes. Pictured above are Mr. Hughes and his wife in November 2005.

As a life-long educator, J. Lyndal Hughes set he course for Northwest ISD as the district’s first superintendent. J. Lyndal Hughes established a vision of excellence and a commitment to student success that continues on today.

J. Lyndal Hughes was born on November 10, 1906 to James Franklin and Nanie D. Hughes in Vera, Texas. Mr. Hughes began his education in Lone Star Common School District at a one-teacher elementary school. He attended high school at an unaccredited school in Vera, and continued his education at North Texas State Normal where he spent one year in demonstration school and two years in college. He earned his Bachelors of Arts Degree (1928) and Masters of Arts Degree (1952) from the University of Texas at Austin, and later attended graduate seminar at the University of Utah in 1968.

J. Lyndal Hughes began his teaching career in 1933 at Sunset Rural High School in Mundy, Texas and was quickly elected the Knox County School superintendent the following year. In 1939, Mr. Hughes taught half of the school year in a one-teacher school in a ranching community in Knox County.

J. Lyndal Hughes became the first superintendent of Northwest ISD in 1949 and served that role for eight years.

Mr. Hughes passed away in April of 2008 at the age of 101 in Bedford, Texas. His desire to educate others continues on through those who teach at J. Lyndal Hughes Elementary.
