Reading for Enjoyment

Our goal for Hughes Elementary students is that they will be avid readers.  We do not push rewards or incentives for reading because research shows that this can have a negative impact over time.  The prize in reading is what you learn from the texts.

We provide time each day in school for students to find books that interest them and to practice their reading skills.  During this independent reading time, as part of our workshop model for ELA, also provides students time to share their book with other students and the teacher.  We want to build a culture of readers that will continue to read for information and enjoyment long after they leave Hughes Elementary.
